The Wisdom of Mae West

I dress for women and undress for men. –Mae West

Mae West is one of my spirit animals if your spirit animals dress in black peignoirs, keep track of lovers by making notches in her garter belt, and drip with diamonds. (A brief list of my spirit animals include the terrapin–go terps!, Joe Biden, Helen Gurley Brown, and Dame Shirley Bassey. If you sense a common theme, holla at me. I may have a prize for you and thank you is considered a prize.)

I stumbled across this gem of an interview in this book. (The edited version of the interview and chapter can be found here.)

Here are some of the quotations that struck a chord in me:

  • I’ve been in more laps than a napkin.
  • The nearness of an attractive man kept me in a constant state of sensual unrest.
  • Sex and work have been the only two things in my life.
  • Some women know how to get what they want. Others don’t. I’ve always known how. If you gotta ask, that’s bad. You’re missing something.
  • Honey, sex with love is the greatest thing in life. But sex without love—that’s not so bad either. Sex is the best exercise for developing everything.
  • Trust has to precede lust.
  • Men are easy to get but hard to keep.
  • You have to keep your eye on the balls. If you don’t take good care if your man someone else will.
  • Only striking originality lends itself to imitation.
  • Brains are an asset–if you hide them. If you’ve got some brains in reserve people can’t use you.
  • Money is a great potion for a love affair.
  • Men admire devotion in their wives, beauty in other women.
  • Too much a good thing can be wonderful.
  • The sex drive is behind everything we do. The stronger the sex drive the stronger the desire to create.

Words of wisdom for the ages. A bad girl can teach some of us good girls a think or two about life, and I am always eager to learn from the best.  Every woman should have a black peignoir in her stash, and every woman should have a bit of Mae West spunk (or at least a few of her quotations and her predilection for fine lingerie) in her life. She was the original silver screen bad girl with a good heart.
